Supporting Our Neighborhood Schools.

The Education Committee works to combat the negative effects of privatization on our neighborhood schools. We work to:

  • Prevent the expansion of privately run charter schools, which divert students and resources from neighborhood schools.
  • Support professionals working in schools, including teachers and principals.
  • Encourage progressive state and local policies that fund public education and enhance democratic control over local education policy and schools.
  • Bring community residents and families into the neighborhood schools to better understand social and educational opportunities available in our community schools.

In 2016, Network 49 collected over 2,600 signatures in favor of a charter school freeze referendum. The referendum received over 11,000 votes, with more than 62% in favor of a freeze on further expansion of charter schools in the 49th Ward.
